Home-made Khartaal (Chhenay)
This is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, but I never got around to it. Those of you who attend long kirtan programs and sit near the stage area have probably noticed that these tend to break a lot. The nails start coming out, the little metal things crack and fall out, the thin metal pieces along the side start coming off, and the wood starts splintering. A lot of times while playing I try to fix them. Once I looked carefully and I saw printing on the little metal disks, realizing that they were made from some can or other recycled metal. After that
I thought someday I would try to make my own. Now I finally got a chance to go buy a piece of wood from the hardware store, and I started working on it. The cutting was much more difficult than I thought, and I worked pretty slowly. But I’m finally done! I made sure the edges are all nice and rounded and smooth. My grandma likes playing it because it is a lot lighter than the others. Here it is:
